Motivated by the great desire to spread the Evangelical Message throughout the world, the Dominican Sisters of Blessed Imelda arrived in the Philippines on March 7, 1991.
The town of Calabanga was the chosen place to start their mission. Thus, convinced that education develops man and makes him more receptive to the Gospel, they decided to open an educational institution in June 1993 - the SAN LORENZO RUIZ CATHOLIC SCHOOL. It aims to communicate a taste of the heavenly things through education. The San Lorenzo Ruiz was the first and the only Catholic school in Calabanga. It started its operation by offering pre-school education.
To answer the increasing demand of parents and other people in Calabanga, the Sisters widened their horizon by expanding the school’s operation. In the year 2001, they adopted a new name for the school – DOMINICAN SCHOOL OF CALABANGA, after St. Dominic De Guzman, the founder of the Order of Preachers. Since then, the school gradually opened the elementary level.
Another indication of the school’s effort toward continuous growth and development was the introduction of the Montessori Approach in teaching in the Pre- School Department in 2004. The move was not only a change in the teaching approach but also an expansion of facilities in terms of instructional materials and upgrading of pre- school teachers. To meet the expanding requirements of operation and to be able to offer the best to its clientele, a new building was constructed in the same year.
The school as it continues to elevate the quality of its curricular offerings opened its special courses program in 2002 for the personal growth and development of the pupils and to prepare them to meet the challenges of their ever changing environment especially in terms of modern technology.
In school year 2006-2007, DSC had its first Grade VI Graduation Exercises. As of school year 2007-2008 the school has a population of 444 pupils, 218 males and 226 females. Because of the constant request from parents in and out of school, and the benefits that could be extended to the people of Calabanga, particularly to the youth, the DSC opened first year high school during the school year 2008-2009. The additional educational level correspondingly resulted to additional pupils and teachers. |
